Extreme Makeover: Master Bathroom Edition

When we moved into our lovely home (almost a year ago!), the ONLY room that did not get touched AT ALL was the master bathroom. The laundry room was painted, closets were painted, even the pantry was shown some love, but we decided that the master bathroom was something that we could hold off on. AKA we were sick of house projects.

Well, the last couple months have found me itching to do something to our master bathroom. Why? Observe:

While these pictures were taken after our shower curtain and towels and such had already been removed, this was the general idea of our bathroom. Ho-hum.

So, about 5 hours of work later and....

Ta da!

Let me point out some of the features of this, our new bath space:
  • painted a nice, neutral gray
  • new shower curtain and towels
  • new light fixtures
  • framed mirror
  • decorative touches, including the wall sconces, flowers, and apples
All done pretty cheaply, I might add.

I LOVE IT.

  1. Great work! Love how you framed out the mirror -- did you get any "in-process" photos? That would make a great tutorial; I'm guessing lots of people have similar mirror situations.

You should think about submitting this transformation as a "Reader Redesign" on the Young House Love blog: http://www.younghouselove.com/2010/07/reader-redesign-stellar-stencil/ They love good low-cost/high-impact stories... :-)

  2. Jennifer: We didn't get any photos of the framing process...but that is mostly because I got the idea from a tutorial I found. :) Here's the link to it: http://showandtell-sausha.blogspot.com/2010/05/framed-mirror-tutorial.html

  3. Katie, it looks great! I've see that mirror tutorial around. Was it as easy as everyone makes it sound? Because I want to do it.
    Tell it to me straight.

  4. Marie- sorry it took me a couple days to respond to your question! I don't know if you'll even see this now...but I'll answer you anyway.

The mirror was not as simple as the tutorials made it sound, but that might have been because of our circumstances. The mirror was held up with clips, so we had to cut notches in the frame to fit around the clips, which was kind of annoying. Also, the frame stuff we used was pretty bowed, so it wouldn't hold in place with just masking tape. We had to borrow some clamps and clamp it to the mirror while the liquid nails dried. This was kind of tough because we really didn't want to take the mirror down because a)it is so big (and probably heavy) and b)hanging it back up with the clips and the frame would probably be nightmarish. So...if you have a smaller mirror than ours and you can take it down to put the frame on and you're willing to stick the mirror to the wall using Mirror Mastic or something...piece of cake. :)
